Lesson 8a: Tagging - Social Bookmarking

Created an account on Del.icio.us, I can only imagine how useful this tool can be in the real world of surfing the web when looking for a specific topic. After creating the account I played around and looked at some sites that I might want to “bookmark” and found it very easy to substitute a TAG rather than go through the process of bookmarking to ‘My Favorites’. You see an advantage to using tags especially when you start looking for a bookmark under ‘My Favorites’. I never seem to remember exactly where it was I filed that particular bookmark. Now it will be easier. All I have to remember is the TAG I used. It is also helpful to have a list of the tags I have assigned.

After looking at the site Technorati that to me looked like a news site, I do not know what to think. I would guess if you just wanted to see the news dealing with certain tags such as the Presidential Election it could be of help. To make any kind of a comment on Technorati I need more information. I will continue to look into this medium or someone can enlighten me. At this time, I do not see much value in it.

Lesson 7: YouTube (continued):

After looking at all of the puppies, I thought I should see what I could find under a search of ‘Libraries’ and how to applied it to a Library Website. I was very surprised to find several Public Libraries already have added their own videos to the YouTube site. Yes, they were a bit like commercials for the library but the list includes:
1) Promotions for story time,
2) How to use the library self check out,
3) Library tours,
4) Interlibrary Loan how to guides,
5) Tutor for help on homework,
6) Instructions on use of the Library {OPAC} then locating the item on the shelf,
7) Book hooks,
8) What is new in the Library,
9) Programs available at the Public Library,
10) The list seems to be endless.

I have to say the video on the internet can be useful in promoting Public Libraries. The uses are unlimited if done in a tasteful manner.

Lesson 7: YouTube
For Lesson 7 it was recommended that we explore some of the sites where the videos that have been put on the internet by all sorts of users. So began the search of the YouTube site. Since I am not into filmmaking [not even the home moves kind], I thought it was like watching the commercials on TV [which I try to avoid]. Some of the people real have an opinion and like to share it. Some of the clips I saw were downright disgusting and the language they were using really turned me off. I could not finish watching some of the clips not for any amount of money.

When I happened on a clip about puppies, I was fascinated by their cute antics. Nice clean fun and cute little faces to boot. You could say I fell in Luv with the video Puppy Luv and had to add it to my blog.

Podcasts

I have listened to the introduction for Podcasts by Suzanne and the webcast by Greg Schwartz [A Beginner’s Guide to Podcasting: Part 1- A Consumers Guide] and even took a few notes.

Went to Podcastalley, Yahoo Podcasts, and Podcastnet and checked out what they had dealing with book reviews. Most of what I saw dealt with comic books. I have to say this podcasts thing has not grabbed my interest to the point I would go out of my way at this time to seek further information on this topic

Although I did add an RSS feed to my bloglines account, my interest would be in an MP3 so I would be able to download a book for listening. Can anyone out there tell me why in the advertisements for MP3’s they are telling me how many songs can be downloaded but not how many hours? I see an MP3 [with a bookmark] as something to save me from fussing with tapes and/or CDs.
